What is Yoga?
The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga
originated. Union occurs between the Mind, Body and Spirit. What is commonly
referred to as "yoga" can be expressed as "asanas", which are physical postures or poses.
Yoga is the joining together
of the Self to the Source (which is Spirit). Yoga inspires
and empowers you through knowledge, spiritual teachings and
wisdom to achieve your full potential so you may enjoy a richer,
more rewarding life.
Yoga Benefits are:
Inspires your Will, Concentration, Strength, Flexibility and Balance
Stretches and Elongates Muscles, Joints and Tendons
Promotes Overall Well-Being for Healthy Aging
Enriches your Life through Self-Discovery
What are the Eight Limbs and how does it apply to Yoga?
According to the Patanjali,
one of the ancient texts that are the basis for yoga philosophy,
there are eight "limbs" of yoga. Asanas is one of them.
Each limb individually represents one aspect of
achieving a healthy and fulfilling life and all limbs are
integrated with and connected to our "center" (core). During yoga all limbs are practiced simultaneously.
Why is proper breathing such an integral part of Yoga?
Yoga centers around
Pranayama; Prana, meaning "breath of life" and Yama, meaning
"opening". It is through the breath that we move energy up
and down the spine to stimulate and draw from our five senses.
Also we move energy up and down the heart so as to empty it when
it gets too heavy.
It is through Pranayama that we learn to "concentrate" and it is only through
"concentration" that you can obtain what you really want.
What is Meditation and
why is it so important?
Meditation is a
practice whose basic principal is quieting the mind to bring
about rumination. By quieting thoughts through
contemplation, reflection and the desire to reach your Source
(the center of who you really are) you are more apt to
understand your desires, needs and answers more clearly.
Some of the benefits
of regular Meditation:
Reduces stress which can lead to anxiety
Decreases blood pressure

Beginner "Hatha" Yoga (flow sequence)
Hatha is a standardized form of yoga in which placing yourself
in specific asanas (poses) and utilizing your breath, physical
and mental focus allows your energy to flow freely. It is
this opening, strengthening and flexibility which oxygenate your
system, circulate blood flow and releasing tension in areas that
generally carry your stress.
"Restorative"
Yoga (Stretching & Flexibility)
Restorative yoga is not generally considered a traditional form
of yoga practice. It does, however work in conjunction
with some standard asanas, breathing, meditation and mental
concentration. Working on areas of the body which carry
most of the stress (i.e., neck, shoulders, back and hips) are
strengthened through holding the stretch longer as to elongate
the muscle and allow energy to flow more freely whereby
releasing stress and tension.
